I am a mother.  I have four children.  It was not by accident that these children came to me, rather it was  a deliberate choice that my husband and I made to create this family.  When our oldest child was born I made the difficult decision to leave a job I loved in order to stay home and raise our children.  It was very hard, but we knew that we didn’t have a family in order to have other people raise our children.  We were lucky enough to be in a situation where we could survive on only one income.

So here I am, a mother.  I’m doing a job I’ve done for nearly eleven years, and sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.  Sometimes I’m so wrapped up in the chaos of schedules and laundry and preparing food and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, that I forget what I knew all those years ago.  That I wanted to be a mother.  That I knew that I could be a powerful influence for good in the lives of our children.  That motherhood was a choice I made.

The book “Deliberate Motherhood” is a wonderful reminder of all that is good about the job of being a mom.  It’s part instruction manual, part comic relief, and part cheering section for the mother who desires a little bit more focus in her job.  In the book, the authors address issues we all face at one time or another such as finding peace, being more organized, being more patient, accepting the things we can’t change; and doing it all with more fun and optimism.  The book is divided into 12 areas of focus, so it easily lends itself to a year-long program where you can focus on a different area each month.  However, the chapters are short and entertaining enough that you could sit down and read it entirely in a few days (yes, even you who are juggling a million things at once in this job you’ve chosen).  If you’re looking for an inspirational collection of tales of motherhood including advice on how to be more present in this endeavor, then look no further.

As an added bonus, they’re offering a special giveaway over at the Power Of Moms for anyone who purchases the book during the month of September.
