New Year’s Resolutions

A little late, I know. But, you know what they say: better late than never! (I love whoever said that, because I need to use it a lot!) We finally sat down as a family and wrote out our New Year’s Resolutions the other day. We used the questions that Gabrielle of Design Mom uses:

1. This year I want to learn:
2. I want to read:
3. I want to make:
4. I want to visit:
5. I want to change:
6. I want to be better at:
7. Most of all, I want:

I printed up a paper for each member of the family with their name and the year at the top, followed by the questions and a place for them to write their answer. I have to say, it was fabulous! We had some of the best goals ever set in this family. Usually we just give the kids a blank piece of paper and try to explain to them about setting goals, give them some examples and let them go to it. But our kids always had trouble coming up with things to work toward, and when they did the goals always lacked specificity, no matter how hard we tried. Using these questions got our kids to focus on a few very specific areas, and it was so easy for them to write down some things they want to accomplish this year. Hooray! Now that they’re written we just have to help them learn how to work toward a goal. Here are some of the goals they came up with:

I want to learn to ride a bike
I want to visit cousin Alice
I want to change how I act when I’m mad
I want to make clothes for my stuffed animals
I want to read all about beagles
I want to be better at saving money
I want to read the entire Harry Potter series
I want to visit Disneyland
I want to make a dollhouse
I want to be more kind
I want to be better at getting to church on time
I want to make a t-shirt
I want to be more grateful
I want to visit my cousins Miri and Brynn

It looks like it’s going to be a great year! I think we’ll be able to do everyone’s place they want to visit (that was my biggest concern – that someone was going to say they wanted to visit China and then we would have to break their heart when we told them we couldn’t go).

I’m very excited this year to work toward these goals with our children!

I know a great way they can visit Miri and Brynn and Disneyland at the same time! Awesome! We are such a wonderful goal!
